York Boat
In 1749, the Métis people proudly built the first official York boat. It became the main form of water transportation. The transition from canoe to the York was fueled by the boat’s remarkable ability to carry heavy loads. With a capacity of up to 6,000 pounds the York boat required a crew of only six to eight people. In the Michif language, this boat was known as the “canot du nord.”
