In our vibrant Métis communities, music and dance hold a special place in our hearts. We have proudly developed our own exceptional fiddle-playing techniques and dance styles. With the introduction of the fiddle by the Scottish and French, we swiftly embraced it and added our own Métis touch. Our music is a beautiful fusion of our First Nations heritage and European influences, resulting in distinct rhythms and melodies that truly showcase our joyful and lively culture. The Michif word for fiddle is “aen vyayloon”.

The fiddle has become a key feature of Metis identity through the cultural prominence of jigging and social fiddling. Originating from the Red River Region, the Metis fiddle has a similar ethnogenesis as the culture of peoples itself.
