The 7 Grandfather Teachings are a set of teachings that form the foundation of Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) values for living. Several Indigenous cultures have embraced the teachings within their communities. Each teaching represents a fundamental value that guides individuals in leading a balanced and harmonious life.
Wisdom (Beaver): Wisdom is the ability to make sound decisions based on knowledge, experience, and understanding.
Love (Eagle): Love encompasses compassion, empathy, and respect for oneself and others.
Respect (Buffalo): Respect involves honoring all living beings, the environment, and one’s cultural traditions.
Bravery (Bear): Bravery is the courage to face challenges, adversity, and fear with integrity and strength.
Honesty (Raven): Honesty emphasizes truthfulness, sincerity, and transparency in thoughts, words, and actions.
Humility (Wolf): Humility encourages modesty, self-awareness, and the recognition of one’s place within the broader community.
Truth (Turtle): Truth represents living in alignment with one’s values, principles, and the natural order of the world.
