A Week of Cultural Exploration and Fun!

Monday, July 22nd, 2024

The chaos of our museum was at an all-time high this past week! Our first summer camp of the year took place July 15th-19th. The camp was called “Youth of Truth”, and campers spent all week learning about Indigenous culture. It was a whirlwind of activity and education!

Instructors Makenna and Sharon were guides for these young minds, leading them through an exploration of Truth and Reconciliation, the Seven Sacred Teachings, the Medicine Wheel, and so much more. I watched with a sense of awe as the campers engaged with each lesson, their eyes wide with curiosity. There was a palpable energy in the air—one that even I, a mannequin with a front-row seat, could feel. I must say that I felt just a pinch of envy watching over the activities this past week as I wished to join in.

I do find it ever so inspiring to observe young minds at work as they craft. As I watched them slowly and carefully gluing and cutting and weaving,  I was mesmerized.

A highlight for me was the fourth day of camp, when the campers played a game called “Monkey Dance”, which involves squatting down then kicking a bent leg out and balancing, then swapping for the opposite leg. The dance was somewhat precarious and I found myself nervous at the chance of a tumble, thinking, oh my goodness, I would shatter if I attempted that!

From my solemn perch in the corner, I was able to spend my time reflecting on the powerful Indigenous stories and symbolism and culture that was taught.

As camp came to a close and the museum returned to its usual tranquility, the buzz slowly dissolved, but the memories of camp lingered in the halls. Though I rest, silent and immobile, I am bursting with excitement of seeing another batch of campers in a few weeks!

Our second and final camp of the summer, called “Eco Explorers”  is coming up on August 12th-16th. Campers will connect with nature, learning about ecosystems and the importance of plants! Contact the museum to register your kiddos now!
